Invisalign versus traditional braces

  • Effectively treats a wide variety of dental issues, including teeth crowding, spacing, crossbite, overbite and underbite.
  • Straightens your teeth.
  • Allows you to eat whatever foods you enjoy.
  • Lets you remove the device when you want.
  • Lets you enjoy virtually invisible teeth-straightening.
  • Allows you to brush and floss your teeth normally for better periodontal health.
  • Consists of smooth, comfortable plastic instead of sharp metal that is more likely to irritate your cheeks and gums.
  • Less office visits; only once every four to six weeks.

Traditional braces

With regular braces, you may experience some or all of the following: pain, discomfort, mouth sores or injuries caused by the brace wires, tooth decay (from inadequate brushing and flossing), plaque buildup, tooth discoloration, tooth/bracket breakage, or difficulty eating. There are also many foods that cannot be eaten with traditional braces; popcorn, chips, bagels, hard-crusted bread, pizza crust, pretzels, nuts, certain candies…plus apples, carrots, and corn on the cob.

Invisalign clear aligners

Impressions are taken of your teeth and are scanned in. We set up your teeth in an ideal way on the computer and clear trays or aligners are built to move your teeth to the new position.  Every 2 weeks you get a new set of trays which will gradually move your teeth. The trays can be removed to clean your teeth and to eat. Treatment times vary from 8 months to 18 months on average.

Alternatives

Instead of moving teeth you can have crowns and veneers to give the illusion of straight teeth.  This does require more dental restorations which will usually be more risk for your teeth going forward. Depending on how much needs to be changed this option could be the same cost or much more expensive.

Cosmetic Dentures

The problem

  • Ill fitting dentures
  • Worn denture teeth
  • Noticeable dentures

The solution

Dr. Melashenko enjoys building beautiful smiles for everyone. We know how important it is to look and feel your best so we offer three levels of choice for your next set of dentures. The most popular is the PREMIUM COSMETIC DENTURE. This denture has beautiful, natural looking teeth and gums that often goes completely unnoticed by friends and family. They can also support your lips to help maintain a youthful appearance. We also offer a BASIC and PLUS denture to fit into everyone’s budget and preferences.

Advantages

Cosmetic dentures can look and feel like real teeth! When the bite is right for any denture they can have very little sore spots and stay in place well. Dentures are the most cost effective way of replacing all the teeth in one jaw.

Disadvantages

All dentures move. It can be difficult to chew everything you want to eat with a denture, they just aren’t as efficient as natural teeth. The fit between the gums and the denture is very important and must be maintained every 2-5 years. Also, if a patient has the condition “dry mouth” they can often be uncomfortable.

Alternatives

Implants that attach to 1. Crowns or bridges, or 2.  A complete denture

Implant supported dentures

The problem

  • Difficult to chew some foods with dentures
  • Dentures that fall out or move

The solution

Dentures can be secured in your mouth with implants. The dentures can still be removed to clean but they are much more secure. This means that you can bite and chew more foods like corn on the cob and apples. Better still it gives you the confidence to smile knowing that your dentures will not be moving or falling out and are often unnoticed by friends or family.

Advantages

Implant supported dentures provide a large improvement in the chewing ability over a denture that just sits on the gum. Eating healthy foods and enjoying eating again can be priceless! If you have ‘dry mouth’ or moveable tissues, implant supported dentures can improve the comfort and keep your dentures from moving.

Disadvantages

The cost of implants is more than just a complete set of dentures. Sometimes there is very little bone left to work with and bone must be added before implants can be placed.

Alternatives

Implants that attach to bridges and crowns. Complete dentures.
